One of the questions I asked myself while doing research for this piece was, “What does the internet SOUND like?” I thought about how its intangible, vast, sweeping reach could be treated like outer space. Then I turned to the more technical, futuristic side of electronic chirps and beeps. And finally, I thought back to what using the internet was like when I was in 5th grade and the iconic sound of a dial-up modem. A mix of pure tones,distortion,and static noise,not unlike an electric guitar.And that’s where we landed. Special thanks to the SRVUSD students for lending their votes to select the ultimate title!
Audio Track Information
This piece includes versions of the full audio track at five different speeds for flexibility in practice and performance:
With very few exceptions, the audio track draws only from the set of acoustic parts (1,2,3, Alternate, and Percussion), albeit using a collection of rock-inspired virtual synthesizers. With that in mind, use of the track is completely optional (but warmly encouraged, if desired) for live performances and learning. Groups on the smaller side or with more incomplete instrumentation may find extra enjoyment and flavor in using the track, while larger rosters may already have plenty of power and volume on their own. It’s up to you!
For performances with the audio track:
Begin at measure 1. The two-bar audio-only introduction/count-in features a strong quarter note pulse to help the conductor set up the band’s entrance in measure 3.
